존경하는 김대중 전대통령님 내외분, 임채정 국회의장님 그리고 오늘 특별연설을 해주실 한양훼 회장과 버틸 린트너씨를 비롯한 내외귀빈여러분!
오늘 우리는 참으로 뜻깊은 행사를 갖게 되었습니다. 지난 9월 발생한 버마 민주화 시위를 우리는 생생하게 기억하고 있습니다. 아직 그 진상이 소상히 밝혀지지 않았지만 수많은 버마 민주인사들이 투옥되고 희생되었다고합니다. UN을 비롯한 세계의 양심들이 버마 군부 정권에 항의하고 버마 | 민중들의 고귀한 희생에 대해 애도를 표하고 있습니다. 이런한 때에 버마 | 민주화를 지원하고 지지하는 '버마 민주화의 밤' 행사가 개최되는 것은 그 어느때보다 의미가 크다고 생각합니다.
존경하는 여러분!
우리도 버마와 같이 과거 군사독재의 암울한 시기를 거쳐왔습니다. 민주주의는 실종되고 온간 부정부패와 인권유린이 자행되었습니다. 그러나 결국 우리는 정권교체를 이룩하고 민주화를 쟁취했습니다.
민주화 운동 과정에서 우리는 세계 도처의 양심적 민주시민들의 수많은 지원을 받았습니다. 이들의 격려와 지원이 얼마나 많은 힘과 용기을 주었는지 우리는 알고 있습니다. 도움을 받던 우리나라가 이제 독재국가 국민들을 지원할 수 있는 민주·인권 선진국가가 된 것입니다. 이제 우리가 그들을 도와주어야 합니다.
오늘 개최하게 된 ‘버마 민주화의 밤’은 김대중 전대통령님의 강한 의지로 마련되었습니다. 김 대통령님은 야당시절부터 대통령 재임 기간, 그리고 퇴임 후에도 버마 민주화와 아웅산 수지 여사의 연금해제를 위한 운동에 적극 참여해 왔습니다. 기회 있을 때마다 김 전대통령은 항의서한이나, 성명서 등을 발표하여 독재 정부를 비난했습니다. 이것은 김 전대통령님의 민주주의에 대한 확고한 신념과 철학에서 비롯된 것입니다.
오늘 김대중 전대통령과 아웅산 수지 여사가 수상한 노벨평화상의 숭고한 정신과 의미를 다시한번 생각하면서 버마의 자유, 평화, 민주화를 한마음으로 기원합시다.
이 행사를 준비하기 위해 많은 분들이 수고를 아끼지 않으셨습니다. ‘버마 민족민주동맹(NLD) 한국지부’, ‘버마 행동’ 회원들께서는 직접 공연을 준비하는 등 행사를 함께 준비했습니다. 그리고 국내 버마 지원단체인 ‘국제민주연대’와 ‘김대중평화센터’의 실무자 여러분들의 노고에 감사드립니다.'

Honorable former President and Mrs. Kim Dae-jung, your excellency Lim Chae-jung, Speaker of the National Assembly, and tonight's speakers, Mr. Harn Yawnghwe, Director of the Euro-Burma Office and Mr. Bertil Lintner, renowned journalist, and distinguished guests!
Tonight's event is truly significant. We vividly remember the mass uprising which took place in Burma last September. Though we do not have a clear picture of what has happened, we understand numerous pro-democracy activists were arrested and sacrificed. The United Nations and the conscientious across the world are protesting against the Burmese military regime, and expressing their deep condolences to the people of Burma who made noble sacrifices. At this critical juncture, it is indeed significant to hold 'A Night for Democracy in Burma' in support of Burma's democratization.
Distinguished guests!
We, Koreans have also long suffered under military dictatorships. Democracy was nowhere to be found, and corruptions, violations of human rights were rampant. However, we finally achieved peaceful transition of power and democracy.
During the process of democratization, we received strong support from so many conscientious people across the world. We are well aware how much courage and strength we could gain from such a strong support and encouragement. Korea has now become an advanced country in terms of democracy and human rights, and we can support people of other nations who are still suffering from dictatorships.
'A Night for Democracy in Burma' has been planned and prepared with strong commitment of President Kim. He has been actively engaged in the activities for Burma's democratization and release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest, from the days of opposition leader, through his Presidency, and even to the days after retirement. Whenever an opportunity arose, he announced protest letters and statements denouncing the Burmese military regime, which reflected his firm belief and commitment to democracy.
Remembering the noble spirit of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to former President Kim Dae-jung and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, I wish we all pray for freedom, peace and democracy in Burma.
Last but not least, I would like to extend sincere gratitude to those who did not spare their efforts in organizing and preparing today's event, including members of the NLD-LA and the Burma Action who prepared tonight's performance, and those at the Korean House for International Solidarity and the Kim Dae-jung Peace Center.
